Victorian Government makes a welcome investment in education for children and young people in out-of-home-care

As part of a boost to education funding of $747 million over four years, the Andrew’s Labor Government will provide $13.2 million to establish new LOOKOUT Education Support Centres to help ensure vulnerable young people in out-of-home-care stay in education.

“This extra funding is a vital investment in the future of young people in out-of-home-care. The LOOKOUT Centres are an excellent initiative that will provide young people with the targeted support they need to remain in school.

Children and young people in out-of-home-care face additional barriers to completing their education, such as often changing schools regularly. This is a great model where a team of support staff monitor and evaluate student progress and help carers and social workers support children’s needs. It’s also exciting that the new Centres will advocate for young people,” said Ms Deb Tsorbaris, CEO.

There are over 6000 school-aged children in out-of-home-care that will benefit from this extra funding. In addition to the funding boost, there will be an ongoing commitment of $4.8 million for the LOOKOUT Education Support Centres.

There was also an announcement today of $72.3m over four years for secondary schools students who are falling behind, helping up 9, 500 students.

“The Centre for Excellence welcomes this important increase in funding for education. Ensuring all children and young people have access to education and the support they need to complete their studies is the best investment we can make for their future.

We look forward to working with the Department of Education and Training on the implementation of the new Centres for kids in out-of-home-care and increasing education support for vulnerable children and young people,” said Ms Tsorbaris.
