Cultural Diversity & Child Protection report launched

The Centre recently hosted the launch of Jatinder Kaur’s report examining data around CALD and refugee families in the Australian Child Protection System.

The paper was launched by Alastair Nicholson, who was Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia between 1988 and 2004.

With 25% of Australian’s born overseas, it is vital greater efforts be put into understanding the needs of these groups, and incorporating multicultural policies into into child protection practices.

Jatinder’s review was supported by a federal Government grant, and captured data gathered between 1996 and 2012.

Jatinder’s paper summarises key findings from this research, and makes recommendations on techniques to ensure that CALD and refugee communities do not become over-represented in the child protection statistics and Out-of-Home Care.
