Step-by-Step is the mandatory, competency-based carer assessment package to be used in the assessment of potential foster carers by community services organisations in Victoria. It includes tools and a clear framework for making assessments of foster care applicants, based on clear evidence of their skills.

Overview of Shared Lives Victoria Training

Shared Lives is the training package for foster care agencies and practitioners to learn and deliver the package to train prospective foster carers. The program provides tools and a clear framework for the training of foster care applicants based on evidence of their suitability. It provides a systematic way of engaging an applicant and share information with them. It guides the assessor to reach an informed decision about the applicant’s suitability to become a foster carer. 
The course will cover: 
  • Information on the concept of brain development and developmental trauma, including its impact on children’s feelings of safety and ability to regulate emotions 
  • Coverage of “repair” parenting, including the PACE approach 
  • Much stronger focus on culture and identity, including Aboriginal identity 
  • Information on the impact on carers’ children 
  • Information about engaging carers to work as part of a team
