National Children’s Commissioner

Prime Minister Gillard and and Ms Mitchell at the announcement

Last week Prime Minister Gillard announced that Australia’s new National Children’s Commissioner will be Megan Mitchell.

Ms Mitchell is currently the NSW Commissioner for Children and Young People, but will be taking on the new position within the Australian Human Rights Commission for the next five years.

The announcement was made at Kingsford Smith School in Canberra, where Ms Mitchell declared that ‘often adults make decisions about children without actually listening to them’. She said that ‘I think that’s a big mistake, and it’s one of the things I want to change”.

The role will have a strong focus on vulnerable children, and involve research and direct consultation with children in relation to commonwealth legislation.
