SUPPORTING ORGANISATIONS TO BECOME CHILD SAFE MUST BE A PRIORITY

14 September 2016

The Centre welcomes the Government’s commitment to ensuring organisations across Victoria are better able to protect children through new child safe standards.

Legislation currently before the Victorian Parliament will provide the Commission for Children and Young People with monitoring and compliance powers, to help ensure organisations adhere to the standards.

“The Centre welcomes the Government’s strong commitment to protecting children by ensuring that it truly becomes everyone’s business,” CEO Deb Tsorbaris said today.

“Organisations across Victoria are currently working to embed the child safe standards in their policies and practices and it’s important that the focus at the moment is on helping them to meet their requirements.

“The Centre has been working to build capacity across a range of sectors, including the child, youth and family services sector, the education sector, local government and other organisations providing services to or working with children.

“So far, we have delivered information sessions to more than 1200 people.

“We look forward to continuing our work with the Government and the Commission, helping to ensure organisations understand their roles and responsibilities and how to implement the new child safe standards.

“They will go a long way to keeping kids safer in our community.”
