Response to High Court Decision – George Pell

The High Court has today quashed the conviction of George Pell. We acknowledge the pain and distress this outcome may cause many Australians, including victim-survivors of child sexual abuse.

We also acknowledge the courage and persistence of the victim survivors who have pursued their right to justice in difficult and public circumstances.

Child abuse in institutions is not a relic from the past. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and the Victoria Betrayal of Trust Inquiry have highlighted how our institutions have consistently failed children. Our child serving organisations must always be vigilant to prevent child abuse from occurring by creating environments where children are believed and actions are taken when they speak up.

We need a strong commitment from all Australians that child sexual abuse will not be tolerated and that we will do everything in our power to protect children from abuse. This means listening to children and acting on their concerns.

Children have the right to be and feel safe this and every other day.
