Media focus on riot crime neglects social factors

Today’s media update focuses on the London riots, coverage of which has emphasised "criminal opportunism", failures of policing and individual moral responsibility, and has included descriptions of the spreading lawlessness as a sickness, contagion or virus.

Here we have selected coverage questioning the social origins of the riots (including the response to the London police shooting), with a Salvation Army opinion piece in today’s Herald Sun asking whether similar riots could happen here.

Our update concludes with coverage of the recent Victorian Police announcement of a crackdown on commuter crime that coincided with coverage of the London riots.
